Unisys and mmO2 to Provide Mobile Data Services with High-Speed Access

date: February 20, 2002

In one of the company's first partnership deals since its spin-off from British Telecom and public offering on the London stock exchange last November, mmO2 has signed an agreement with Unisys Corporation to jointly market and distribute a new range of mobile data services for corporate customers based on Microsoft wireless software and high-speed GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) mobile data networks.

Services will include remote access to e-mail, contacts and calendar information as well as full-color Internet access. The range of mobile data devices will include mmO2's forthcoming O2 xDA, a Pocket PC with integrated mobile phone and data application capabilities. A preview of this device can be seen at the Unisys booth at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, February 19-22.

Unisys plans to combine its support and systems integration skills with mmO2 mobile data expertise and market-leading wireless software from Microsoft to create packaged services comprising long-term GPRS data and voice subscription contracts and new mobile data devices for its high-value business customers.

Microsoft Mobile Information Server (MMIS) services will be a key component for providing secure wireless access to corporate intranets and Microsoft Exchange data.

Beginning April 1, 2002, Unisys plans to offer packaged mobile services to Unisys business customers in the UK, Isle of Man, Republic of Ireland, Netherlands and Germany. As a result, users should benefit from having one device for all of their mobile communications needs.

In addition to selling the O2 xDA to its business customers and providing systems integration, Unisys plans to bring consulting, project management, maintenance and second line support services to the offering.

"This agreement marks a shift in focus for Unisys from selling mass market voice messaging solutions to operators to selling enterprise data solutions through operators," said Andrew Wyse, vice president and general manager for Global Communications Industry, UK, for Unisys. "Mobile connectivity is the future of the communications market, so this is a great opportunity for Unisys and an exciting area for us to be involved in."

"Unisys can bring to market a ready-made solution to complement our growing mobile data portfolio," commented Kent Thexton, chief marketing and data officer, mmO2. "Our mutual goals are to meet the needs of those who have to communicate on the move, allowing them to be reachable and remain connected to vital information at all times."
