DoCoMo plans to expand and shows new phonedate: February 22, 2002 Japan's DoCoMo is expected to expand its 3G service and has announced a new mobile videophone. On Friday Japanese mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo, said FOMA would be rolled out nationwide and will cover a large part of the country by the end of fiscal 2002. DoCoMo has roughly 30,000 subscribers to its 3G services. When FOMA was launched last October, it was only available within a 30 kilometer radius in downtown Tokyo. The service will expand coverage to 60 percent of the nation's populated area by April. Then a further expansion in autumn will mean 90 percent of the country will be covered. Its new handset, FOMA D2101V, will allow users to use real time videoconferencing. In addition to this, its 'i-motion' service will allow users to view movie and listen to music. The phone comes with two built in cameras, one on the front of the phone for videophone calls, and the other on the top for taking video or photographs. The screen has a liquid crystal display with 260,000 colours of 132 pixels by 162 pixels. The phone quality is expected to be the same as that of a landline. It weighs roughly 160g. Data transfer rate is 384kbps and for videophone calls is at 64kbps, same as standard ISDN line.
