Fujitsu and SAGEM Collaborate To Develop Basic Technologies For 3G Wireless Communications

date: February 24, 2002

Fujitsu and SAGEM announced that they have reached and signed an agreement on February 19 to jointly develop basic technologies for 3G mobile phones.

The agreement between Fujitsu and SAGEM will allow the two companies to share their know-how for the development of basic technologies that will be the cornerstone of dual-mode smart phone development. More specifically, joint development will focus on technologies for a new communication platform that enables dual-mode capability and an application platform necessary to run various multimedia functions.

Fujitsu will engage in application platform development in Japan, while SAGEM will focus on the development of a communications platform in France. The two partners will also share research resources, including the exchange of research talent. This collaboration will enable the firms to achieve results more quickly and efficiently. Fujitsu and SAGEM plan to introduce new technologies for 3G handsets by the latter half of 2003. Furthermore, both companies intend to jointly conduct interoperability testing for international roaming, which is expected to be necessary for 3G handsets in Europe and Japan.

Grégoire Olivier, SAGEM's CEO commented: "The mobile phone business is moving towards more services to the end user, with applications based on various platforms. Combining SAGEM's expertise in the field of mobile telecommunications with Fujitsu's expertise in applications will allow us to dramatically speed up the introduction of new and attractive products to our customers."

"Wireless handsets will become ubiquitous in the future, evolving from phones to information appliances," said Akikazu Yajima, Group President of Fujitsu's Mobile Phones Group. "I'm confident that bringing the R&D resources of our two companies together for joint development will result in synergies that facilitate the development of basic technologies for new generation high-end handsets and the accumulation of international roaming service know-how."
