Sagem and Alcatel to launch 3G/UMTS Interoperability Programdate: February 24, 2002 Following the successful interoperability cooperation started in 1999 for 2.5G/GPRS solutions between both companies, Alcatel announced today the launch of a similar campaign with Sagem on 3G/UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) handset devices. Based on the 3GPP standard, interoperability between infrastructure from Alcatel and terminals from Sagem will contribute to the early adoption of 3G/UMTS in Europe. This cooperation between Alcatel and Sagem brings together expertise and competence from both companies, and demonstrates the reality of 3G/UMTS end-to-end solutions, thus opening new business perspectives for their respective customers. This collaboration addresses full end-to-end solutions encompassing AMR voice call services, packet based data services reaching 384Kbps and videotelephony services based on circuit switched calls. Thierry Buffenoir, director of Sagem’s Mobile Phones Division, commented: " We consider interoperability testing to be critical before 3G/UMTS commercial launch. We believe our cooperation with Alcatel will enable us to test and validate 3G services faster." Marc Rouanne, president of Alcatel Mobile Networks activities added: "This cooperation will foster interoperability and contribute to speed up 3G/UMTS roll-out in Europe. This is why we are delighted to continue to work with Sagem."
