Matsushita Aims High in 3G Handset Marketdate: February 28, 2002 - source: BWCS Japan’s number two handset maker, Matsushita, is setting its sights on targets outside Japan and plans to start producing a dual-mode 3G / GSM handset for sale next year. The company’s president, Yasuo Katsura, quoted on Bloomberg News, claimed his company was after a “double-digit share of the world 3G handset market within the next two years.” His goal was later politely described as “optimistic” by several investment analysts. Last year, Matsushita’s Panasonic brand phones were outsold by NEC in Japan for the first time and the vendor is now intent on regaining top spot at home while simultaneously targeting foreign markets. Like NEC, Matsushita has been supplying 3G phones to NTT DoCoMo. Matsushita also has a cooperation deal with US company UTStarcom, which receives 90% of its equipment orders from China. UTStarcom and Matsushita are to jointly develop W-CDMA network equipment for the People’s Republic and other markets. The Japanese company has made no secret of the fact that it is targeting China first in its foreign drive. Matsushita also plans to begin selling i-mode handsets in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, where DoCoMo has licensed its i-mode technology for use by E-Plus and KPN.
