Hutchison 3G to work with Gov to stop paedophiles
February 13, 2003
Hutchison 3G UK has worked with the UK government to draw up a
child protection policy ahead of its expected full commercial launch
on 3rd March 2003.
Hutchison 3G offers MMS, and high-quality video calls and such
services have already caused problems with paedophiles in Japan.
"We are very aware of this issue and we have already developed
a comprehensive child protection policy," said Hutchison 3G director
of external relations Matt Peacock. "Historically, developing a
policy in this area is all part of the battle, but with us it's
already developed."
"We'll work with schools; child safety guidelines are all part
of the process," said Peacock. "We're working with all appropriate
bodies . . . as well as at government policy level."
Video calls will be the only streamed video service at launch.
The operator has turned its back on streamed video content, claiming
intensive consumer tests found that downloads were the preferred
option.
Admitting that network efficiency played a part in the decision,
Peacock said people wanted the store-and- forward ability offered
by downloads.
"If you download a goal of your favourite striker or a cartoon
you may never want to get rid of it," said Peacock. "When we realised
this was what consumers wanted we re-architectured the whole network
and product."
