Cyprus to give away licence
February 14, 2003
Cyprus said on Friday it expects to auction off a GSM licence to
a private telecoms company in the next three months and as an additional
incentive, authorities will give the successful bidder a 3G licence
valid for 20 years and waive additional fees.
Averof Neophytou, the Communications and Works Minister said Cyprus
will issue the final tender documents soon and then there will be
a preselection process for a public auction within the following
three months.
Greece's CosmOTE , Vodafone, Spiderphone (co-operating with Orange)
and Monaco Telecom are likely to take part the auction.
The semi-government corporation CyTA now has the monopoly over
fixed and mobile telephone services on the island.
