KTF to Put TV on Phones
February 14, 2003 - source: BWCS
According to reports in the national press, Korean mobile operator
KTF plans to begin transmitting TV pictures direct to 3G mobile
phones later this month. It is understood that the content on offer
will include a music channel and a news channel.
In total, the mobile company is said to be gearing up to “broadcast”
a choice of nine different TV channels to its 3G customer base.
Viewers will be able to access the programmes via the CDMA2000 1xEV-DO
system. It is reported that the cost of one hour’s programming will
be approximately KRW25,000 (US$20.70)
In October 2002, KTF signed alliances with the internet divisions
of three terrestrial TV companies in Korea: KBS, MBC and SBS. At
the time of signing it claimed that the deals would help provide
more attractive content for its services. KTF says there are now
three handsets which will be able to receive the service, the latest
being the Samsung SPH-3000, which offers full video-streaming on
its colour screen.
