Nokia on track with deliveries
February 18, 2003
Nokia is on track with first half deliveries of its next generation
3G phones comes after smaller rival, Sony Ericsson, unveiled on
Monday its first 3G mobile phone, but said it would be available
commercially only in the second half of this year.
The other mobile phone makers already selling a 3G handset include
NEC of Japan and Motorola. 3G rollout has been delayed as operators
struggle to adapt to the new technology and worsening financial
conditions.
While some European mobile phone manufacturers are only starting
to unveil 3G phones now, their overseas counterparts have been securing
some of the early deals.
Hutchison 3G is planning Europe's first commercial 3G launch next
month, also using non-European manufacturers.
Nokia said it had already delivered around 10,000 of its 3G handsets
globally to operators and infrastructure vendors, including Vodafone,
Orange, Ericsson and Nortel, making it one of the first major players
to sell a phone in Europe running on the much delayed 3G technology.
