NTT DoCoMo confident on 3G future
February 19, 2003
NTT DoCoMo said better handsets, wider network coverage and new
data services would help its disappointing start to 3G. DoCoMo’s
3G FOMA service was launched back in October 2001 but has attracted
fewer subscribers than expected.
The Japanese operator had a hard time selling its 3G service because
of problems with heavy and short battery life handsets and the poor
coverage of its network. DoCoMo Chief Technology Officer Kota Kineshita
defended the company by saying these problems were in the past and
will expands its coverage and introduce new handsets with longer
battery life and 3G features like video calling.
Currently a 30 second video call was 1.8 times more expensive than
a voice call but DoCoMo hopes to make it cheaper so consumers regard
it as a commodity voice call.
DoCoMo announced in January that it would provide subsidies as
much as half the cost of developing 3G handsets to selected 3G handset
manufacturers in Japan. The subsidies are due to end in March 2004
but would be extended if the scheme is successful.
"Since the 3G handsets are not selling very much... the situation
was that makers were not able to get a return on their investments,"
Kineshita said.
It was also rumoured that Motorola was in discussions with DoCoMo
about developing handsets for the operator.
