Qualcomm Announces New Power Management Chips for 3G Wireless Devices

February 19, 2003

Qualcomm Incorporated announced the PM6650 chip, the first member of Qualcomm's new powerOne family of advanced power management chips. The powerOne family of solutions interfaces directly to Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) baseband processors -- initially included with the MSM6250 and MSM6500 chipsets. This family of chips provides battery management, charging functions (including a USB charging option), voltage regulation for the various MSM power regimes, the radioOne RF chips and all other MSM-supported peripheral features designed for high-end, high-speed 3G wireless products.

"The powerOne family of power management solutions offers unparalleled integration of power management functions for 3G CDMA terminals. As data rates increase, tremendous power savings can be realized through the powerOne chip's dynamic voltage scaling for MSM core blocks," said Sanjay Jha, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "The PM6650 chip and other members of the powerOne series will support all of the advanced features of our MSMs -- with specific focus on MSMs offering high-end multimedia features, including MP3, camera and videophone applications, USB-OTG, R-UIM and SD Card -- providing wireless manufacturers and operators with cost-effective solutions for 3G products and services."

With the power savings realized through the use of the PM6650 chip's high- efficiency step-down switch-mode power supplies (SMPSs), battery life is substantially increased. All voltages generated for the MSM and radioOne RF chips are optimized for handset system control with the applicable MSM's system software.

Samples of the PM6650 chipset are expected to be available in the third quarter of calendar 2003.
