Hutchison lost increased in Australia
February 19, 2003
Hutchison Telecom of Australia has reported an jump in its full-year
loss by 44% in 2002 as it continued to pour money into 3G.
However, Hutchison, 58%-owned by Hutchison Whampoa, also said Tuesday
its existing Orange mobile business turned earnings positive in
the second half of the year, as forecast.
The result was in line with expectations for heavy losses as the
operator prepares to launch 3G in the first quarter of calendar
2003.
Hutchison said its net loss for the year to 2002 was A$197.3 million
($116.4 million), compared with a loss of A$137 million a year earlier.
The stock has lost almost half its value in the past year as other
large telecom groups defer plans for costly 3G spending amid a global
telecoms downturn.
Hutchison has already raised A$1 billion to build the 3G network
and previously signaled it would look at debt market funding options
early this year for a remaining A$2 billion.
