Thai Mobile to offer next-generation services in the next few years
February 19, 2003
TOT Corp Plc announced that its 1900MHz cell-phone operator Thai
Mobile would start offering 3G services in the next few years.
Sittichai Songpiriyakit, president of TOT Corp, said yesterday
that Thai Mobile would be the first 3G operator in Thailand, since
TOT is the only telecom carrier to be awarded the 2000MHz frequency
by the government for developing 3G services.
TOT is the majority owner of Thai Mobile, with the Communications
Authority of Thailand holding a minor stake.
The much-vaunted 3G system enables handsets to offer rich multimedia
content. However, it has yet to become as popular as telecom carriers
had hoped due mainly to the costly handsets and services.
