LG showcase WCDMA phones at trade show
February 21, 2003
LG Electronics has taken the first step in introducing its 3G mobile
phone technology to the European market by demonstrating its latest
line of products at the 3GSM World Congress.
LG showcased its 3G video phones along with other major handset
makers such as Nokia of Finland and Ericsson of Sweden.
LG's W-CDMA phone demonstration is aimed at capturing a share of
the budding 3G mobile phone market in Europe. W-CDMA is a 3G technology
competing with cdma2000 1x developed by U.S.-based Qualcomm and
first commercialized by Korean mobile service operators.
LG and other Korean handset makers are leading the global mobile
phone market on the strength of a steadily growing domestic market
where there are more than 32 million mobile phone subscribers.
LG said that its exhibition booth attracted many visitors at the
3GSM World Congress largely because of its IMT-2000 terminals that
can support GSM, GPRS and W-CDMA technologies at the same time.
Korea's major mobile carriers are currently relying on cdma2000
1x and EV-DO technology to offer multimedia-oriented wireless content
to subscribers amid a surging demand for camera phones and videophones.
But SK Telecom, the country's largest mobile carrier, and No. 2
KTF, are scheduled to launch W-CDMA 3G services later this year,
while a handful of mobile handset makers are profitting from investments
made in the GSM technology standard that currently dominates the
European mobile phone market.
