O2 Commits To Irish 3G Targets
February 24, 2003 - source: BWCS
Following last week’s reports that the mmO2 group was planning
to deploy EDGE technology, the company’s Irish subsidiary has confirmed
that it will still meet its 3G rollout deadlines. O2 Ireland was
forced to defend its 3G strategy in the Irish press over the weekend
as some interpreted the company’s renewed interest in EDGE as a
signal that it was looking to postpone UMTS investments. Like the
rest of the group, mmO2’s Irish subsidiary has yet to make a final
decision on whether or not it will deploy EDGE.
O2 Ireland holds one of two B licences for 3G services, the other
B licensee being Vodafone Ireland. One of the key features of the
B concessions is that they allow the holders to pursue a slower
rollout timetable than that of the less expensive A licence. According
to its licence terms, O2 must achieve 33% coverage of the Irish
population by June 2006 and 53% two years later.
O2 and Vodafone will pay just over €114 million for their UMTS
licences, while the A licence winner, Hutchison Whampoa, will stump
up €50.7 million. Hutchison must achieve coverage of at least 80%
of the population and provide network capacity for mobile virtual
network operators.
