Optus to begin trial in July
February 25, 2003
Australian 3G licence holder Optus, parent company of SingTel,
has announced it will begin a 3G network trial in July, and says
it has 12,500 subscribers on its existing GPRS-based multimedia
messaging service (MMS).
Speaking at the launch of video MMS services in Sydney, Optus managing
director Allen Lew said the company had 12,500 subscribers who send
at least one MMS per week.
"They use it 14 times per week for content," Mr Lew said. He said
the existing GPRS network had sufficient capability to deliver services
like video.
Nevertheless, Mr Lew said the trial of 3G services would begin
in July, involving "hundreds, not thousands" of users. The trial
will cover Sydney CBD, North Sydney, and adjacent suburbs St Leonards
and Chatswood. He said that users for the trial would be drawn from
the consumer, SME and corporate segments.
Optus' 3G network infrastructure will be provided by Nokia, although
Mr Lew said the trial would be open to all handset vendors that
wished to take part.
