Lucent unveils new CDMA2000 base station system that extends life
of early CDMA equipment
February 26, 2003
Lucent Technologies introduced a new CDMA2000 base station system
designed to help mobile operators increase capacity by up to three
times on Lucent base stations that have been deployed for nearly
a decade. The Flexent CDMA High Density (HD) 4.0 also provides further
investment protection by supporting new technology as it becomes
available such as intelligent antennas, which can further boost
capacity.
Part of the Flexent OneBTS family of base stations, the HD 4.0
is a base station growth cabinet designed for mobile operators that
currently have existing Lucent AUTOPLEX Series II cellular base
stations. It preserves their investment in the AUTOPLEX systems
by enabling them to reuse much of the equipment – including antennas,
filters and amplifiers – while increasing capacity in the same footprint
by replacing the legacy CDMA cabinet with the HD 4.0.
“The HD 4.0 is a noteworthy achievement in base station development
because it helps our customers preserve their current AUTOPLEX Series
II cellular systems - one of our most widely deployed base stations
and the backbone of many CDMA networks - while significantly increasing
capacity and providing support for future technologies,” said Bill
Zucker, vice president of CDMA base station development, Lucent’s
Mobility Solutions Group. “Needless to say, our customers are excited
about this product because it provides ultimate investment protection
and reduces capital expenditures, while bringing cutting-edge capabilities
to Lucent’s first CDMA base stations.”
The Flexent OneBTS digital radio shelf in the HD 4.0 further protects
a service provider’s network investment because it can support new
technologies including:
- dual band capabilities -- base station can support both 850 and
1900 MHz spectrum in the same cabinet;
- mixed mode capabilities -- base station can support both 3G CDMA2000
and UMTS in the same cabinet;
- transmit diversity -- enhancement that can provide increased voice
and data capacity whether mobile operator’s customer base consists
of 2G CDMA or 3G CDMA2000 users, or a mix of both;
- intelligent antennas -- advanced antenna and digital processing
technology that further enhances 2G and 3G voice and data capacity
and coverage;
