PrairieComm announces Euro 100 3G reference phone platform
February 18, 2004
PrairieComm, a developer and supplier of 3G baseband processors and software, and Mtekvision, a developer and supplier of image processors for embedded cameras for cellular phones, revolutionised the 3G market with the announcement of FronTier100, a Euro 100 bill of materials UMTS/GPRS/GSM reference phone platform. The multimedia-rich platform boasts a bill of materials similar to existing 2.5G handsets-bringing the cost of 3G
phones down to a 2.5G price. Additionally, its highly integrated design facilitates the creation of small, stylish form factors. A live demonstration featuring several of FronTier100's capabilities, including motion picture, image capture and send, and UMTS voice calls, will be demonstrated on a clamshell form factor handset at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, February 23-26.
"The biggest question for the wireless industry is how to generate immediate revenue from 3G considering the high cost of deployment," said John Diehl, CEO and President, PrairieComm, Inc. "FronTier100 answers that question by enabling 3G phones at a 2.5G price. It will serve as a catalyst to the mass adoption of 3G and subsequently, revenue for carriers and suppliers. This is the beginning of cost-effective 3G."
FronTier100 is built around PrairieComm's proven UMTS/GSM/GPRS baseband processor, the PCI5110, and Mtekvision's market-leading MV319, a one-megapixel image processor. The platform's open architecture gives customers a flexible solution while maintaining a low-risk design that gets products to market quickly. Customers using FronTier100 can also expect full product lifecycle support including product definition, vendor and component selection, design and integration, regulatory approval, and product acceptance.
FronTier100 is the first in a series of cutting-edge multimedia reference phone platforms that enable handset suppliers to bring innovative 3G handsets to market quickly. FronTier100 is a form factor platform for low-end feature phones. Future FronTier series platforms for high-end and smart phones will be available in the second half of 2004. Further details, including data sheets, will be on hand at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, February 23-26.
