Nortel to demonstrate 3G networks at 3GSM

February 19, 2004

Nortel Networks will have a large presence at 3GSM World Congress 2004 in Cannes, France, Feb. 23-26 and live demonstrations of its wireless data network solutions.

Nortel Networks presence this year will focus on '3G for Real,' the industry realization of live UMTS networking. Nortel Networks executives will also discuss the benefits of 'transformed networking' -- the convergence of wireline and wireless core networks into a single packet core that can support any access technology. Company representatives will also discuss the advantages of combinations of radio technologies that can help carriers drive down operating and capital expenses and increase average revenue per user (ARPU.)

Demonstrations of 2.5G and 3G services and networking capabilities will be provided across Nortel Networks wireless solutions portfolio - including UMTS, GSM, GPRS and EDGE air interfaces - at the Nortel Networks booth and in a private customer experience center at the Majestic Hotel. Demonstrations and presentations will include:

Consumer Applications

- Mobile Entertainment - video streaming for operator-programmable solutions, live-feed broadcast services, video on demand, multiplayer gaming, mobile music, pre-stored local content (ringtone, song and clip revenue opportunities).
- Location based services on GSM, GPRS, EDGE and Assisted GPS.

Business/Enterprise Applications

- Wireless Mesh Networks - interoperability of Wi-Fi and commercial wireless networks, going beyond 'hot spot' coverage to enable true, uninterrupted mobility between wireless local area (LAN) and wide area (WAN) networks.
- Video Communication - video telephony integrated video mail solutions using multiple platforms to redirect calls and eliminate lost or unanswered calls; PC video gateway for UMTS.

Network Optimization/Revenue Generation

- Radio Resource Management - tools for optimizing spectrum, including Always On, iRM scheduling Adaptation.
- Wireless Network Management - comprehensive sub-network management solution, including 'call trace' for analyzing call/network behavior.
- Push to Talk.

Core Network Capabilities

- Content Based Billing - revenue from mass market, high-margin services like SMS and photo messaging; value-based pricing.
- Network Transformation - to achieve full mobility, services must be available not only "anytime, anywhere" but continuously as users move across different access networks, fixed or wireless.
- IP Multimedia Subsystem - 3GPP IMS; migration to R5 IMS.
