AudioCodes extends media gateway products for UMTS

February 20, 2004

AudioCodes, a provider of Voice over Packet (VoP) technologies and network products, announced that it has extended its Stretto converged (wireless and wireline) media gateway product family to comply with the UMTS R'4 and R'5 standards. AudioCodes' UMTS-enabled media gateways and blades enable OEM vendors to build and offer next generation cellular networks, based on carrier-grade, feature- rich, standards-compliant media gateways.

Using AudioCodes' UMTS-compliant media gateway products, 3G operators can cap investment in legacy TDM equipment or proprietary technologies and build UMTS networks that are cost-effective, future-proof and support revenue generating applications.

Operators of new networks (Greenfield) are no longer required to spend money on limited R'99 solutions, while established GSM operators can deploy R'4-based GSM infrastructure and plan on smooth migration of their R'99-based networks towards R'4/R'5 and ultimately to All-IP.

The Stretto Media Gateways, SB-6310 Compact PCI (cPCI) Media Gateway Blade and TPM-6300 Media Gateway module support UMTS-specific capabilities and interfaces per the 3GPP R'4 and R'5 standards.

"Using our converged UMTS-compliant media gateway products, leading OEM vendors can better differentiate their network solution by focusing on development of MSC servers and Applications while outsourcing the media gateway," said Yehuda Hershkovits, Vice President, Systems Group at AudioCodes. "Supporting both wireline and wireless (GSM, UMTS, CDMA and CDMA2000), as well as ATM and IP on the same platforms, AudioCodes' Stretto family provides great flexibility for developing converged media gateways and complete network solutions, as required by many Tier1 operators."

"AudioCodes' introduction of UMTS Release 4 compliant gateways enables a new breed of advanced packet-based wireless and wireline converged networks," said Jeremy Duke, Principal Analyst and Cofounder for Synergy Research Group. "These new gateways will help OEM vendors to expand their addressable market and competitiveness and speed their UMTS and GSM penetration."

AudioCodes' UMTS-compliant products support both ATM and IP with seamless migration, protecting investment in legacy infrastructure. Modular and scalable, the media gateways support Access, Trunking and combined Access- Trunking gateways configurations for flexible deployment options. By offering converged wireline and wireless capabilities, including a magnitude of vocoders, signaling and interfaces, AudioCodes' media gateways enable harmonization of the network infrastructure and simplification of maintenance and operations. In addition, AudioCodes' Stretto gateways are available in low, medium and high densities catering for different central office sizes and matching subscribers' scalable growth with investment ("pay-as-you-grow").

AudioCodes will be showcasing its Stretto UMTS converged media gateway in Hall 2, Booth #F1 at the 3GSM conference and exhibition in Cannes, France, February 23rd through February 26th.
