Alcatel provides 3 Austria with enhanced video applications

February 25, 2004

Alcatel announced that it has been awarded by Hutchison 3G Austria, operating in the market under the brand '3' as Austria's first purely mobile multimedia provider, a contract for the delivery of its video gateway solution. Alcatel's solution will allow Hutchison 3G Austria to introduce enhanced video services. Initially the system will be deployed in Austria.

In a first step, Alcatel's solution will provide video streaming services based on circuit-switched technology. In a seamless manner, the subscribers will benefit from access to live cameras and video clips. Besides, the solution will also provide video telephony services between mobile subscribers and correspondents using a PC over a fixed network connection. In a further step, the project is expected to provide videoconferencing services between multiple parties, with fixed and mobile users.

This global solution builds upon Alcatel's end-to-end integration capabilities, and combines a video gateway, streaming functionalities as well as a softswitch-powered, open and modular Next Generation Network (NGN) architecture.

Jan Trionow, Engineering Director of Hutchison 3G Austria, declared : "Here, by working with Alcatel, we will be able to offer our Austrian customers high-quality, easy-to-use video services on their 3VideoMobile".

"Video is all about sharing emotions. It's about seeing people face to face wherever you and they are, as well as accessing and sharing attractive video content in a ubiquitous manner. For this reason mobile video services are becoming more and more important to the entire mobile industry," added Marc Rouanne, Chief Operating Officer of Alcatel's mobile communications activities.
