NEC selects Agilent's power amplifier for 3G phones

Agilent Technologies announced that NEC has incorporated Agilent's W-CDMA power amplifier into a new 3G video handset, the NEC 338. The module's high power-added efficiency (PAE), the industry's highest, gives NEC the power and high linearity it needs to implement innovative multimedia features while extending the phone's talk time.
The NEC 338 mobile phone is the smallest and lightest 3G handset to hit the European market, weighing only 114 g and measuring just 93.8 mm x 47.1 mm x 23.3 mm. The handset, available in either black or silver in a new clamshell design, offers a full-color high-resolution screen, speakerphone, rotatable camera for video calls, and 17 MB internal memory. An integrated MP3 player and Java technology enable access to music and games.
The Agilent power amplifier module is well equipped to support the multimedia features of the NEC 338 handset. With a typical PAE of 46 percent -- the industry's highest for W-CDMA -- the module is capable of delivering 116 hours of standby time, 200 minutes of talk time and 130 minutes of video calling for the NEC 338. The module's small size makes it ideal for use in the smaller "candy bar" and "flip phone" handset configurations that have become so popular with consumers.

The ACPM-7881 power amplifier is designed around Agilent's E-pHEMT (enhancement-mode pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor) process technology. It is optimized for UMTS/GSM multi-mode standards and operates from a single-polarity power source over the UMTS2100 1920 to 1980 MHz frequency range. Its high output power (+28.5 dBm) reduces the power losses associated with dual-band, single antenna handsets, while its low noise power (-140 dBm/Hz, typical) helps ensure the handset's ability to operate under difficult conditions.
