Lack of quality 3G handsets not dissuading StarHub
February 27, 2005
Singapore's StarHub Wednesday reiterated its plans to launch 3G mobile phone service in the first half of the year despite concerns over a lack of quality handsets on the market.
During a company briefing, StarHub President and Chief Executive Terry Clontz said current handsets were unimpressive. He described current 3G handsets as large expensive phones with short battery life. The cost of 3G handsets is around S$800 compared with S$200-S$800 for 2G/2.5G phones that can also send and receive digital music and video. (£1 = S$3.1)
However, Clontz said that a quality network is already in place and exciting contents and applications are available for 3G users.
Rivals MobileOne (M1) and SingTel have recently announced their 3G services. M1is offering video calling at S$0.40 per minute while video streaming, MP3 downloads and Internet surfing will remain free until 31 March 2005. Consumers have the choice of either the Motorola E1000 handset or the Nokia 6630, both at S$798.
For the launch, SingTel customers can make video calls for S$.10 and access most of the 3G content free of charge. In addition to M1's two handsets, SingTel has also added the Motorola A1000, SonyEricsson Z1010 and the LG U8100 to its handset line-up. Prices range from S$648 to S$988.
"Our aim is to give our customers peace of mind so that they are willing to give 3G a try," said Mr Lim Chuan Poh, SingTel's Executive Vice President (Consumer Business) & CEO of SingTel Mobile.
