Georgia has 3G on its Mind

February 23, 2006 - source: BWCS

The National Communications Commission in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia has announced plans to auction a third generation mobile services licence this spring. The commission said that bids will be accepted until April 6th, with the auction terminating on the 21st of April.

The licence will grant the holder the right to launch services in the frequency bands 1,910MHz to 1,915MHz, 1,920MHz to 1,935MHz and 2,110MHz to 2,125MHz.

Georgia is currently dominated by two mobile GSM operators with one small CDMA company. The GSM giants are Geocell and Magticom, which control 55% and 44% of the market respectively. The lone CDMA player, Iberiatel, has around 1% of the market. The small Black Sea country has a population of just over 5.3 million and a mobile penetration rate of 20%.
