Germany to Sell More 3G Licences

February 12, 2007 - source: BWCS

The German telecoms regulator, the BNA, has announced plans to create more 3G licences and put them up for sale in 2008. According to press reports in Germany, the spectrum to be put up for auction will be in the 2.6GHz range.

It is not yet clear whether the current 3G licence holders will be allowed to bid in the new round of auctions. The regulator has said that it expects that at least one new operator will be granted a licence to enter the German mobile market. If this turns out to be the case, then the current incumbents: T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2 and E-Plus may try to force up the price.

In late summer 2000, six companies paid an average of US$7.7 billion each for the right to offer 3G mobile phone services in Germany.
