Texas Instruments launches 3G wireless center in India

date: 11th January 2001, source: yahoo.com

A wholly-owned Indian subsidiary of US-based Texas Instruments Inc said Thursday it had set up a third generation wireless (3G) center in Bangalore, the IT capital of India.

"The launch of this center is a key step in our new focus of developing integrated hardware and software solutions that power the varied end equipment of the communications and Internet age," said Biswadip Mitra, managing director of Texas Instruments India.

"The TI (India) 3G wireless center will build both digital signal processor software and hardware solutions for the exploding wireless market. We will also develop strategic partnerships with key players," Mitra told reporters.

The global wireless market is expected to cross a billion subscribers in 2002.

The company said about two out of three cellular phones in the world currently were powered by an integrated single-chip system with Texas Instruments digital signal processors, micro-controllers and memories.

"We will focus single mindedly on building integrated semiconductor and software solutions for end-equipment such as Internet audio players, cable modems, digital subscriber lines, digital still cameras and IP (Internet protocol) telephony," Mitra said.

The 3G wireless center will initially employ 50 staff. Third generation wireless communications will allow high speed Internet access among other advanced applications.

Texas Instruments established the first 100 percent export-oriented software technology park in Bangalore in 1986.

Mitra said the Asia Pacific region was projected to have one of the highest growth rates in electronics over the next 25 years.
