Malaysia Min: 3G Bandwidth Assigned By End 2001

date: 12th January 2001

Malaysia is still targeting the latter half of 2002 for the introduction of third generation mobile phone Internet technology, known as 3G, the Minister for Energy Communications and Multimedia said Friday.

This would mean the allocation of bandwiths to establish the service would have to allocated by the government before the end of 2001, Leo Moggie said at a press conference following the launch of a private sector Internet portal.

"There is a lot of hype about 3G, we're not really in a rush," Moggie said.

Malaysia is "still targeting the introduction of 3G for the second half of 2002."
