Estonia will decide by May 1st on distribution of UMTS licences

date: 18th January 2001, source: europemedia.net

A commission to deal with the issue of third generation (3G) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) licences set up last week will make its proposals concerning the distribution of the licences to the Transport and Communication Minister by May 1.

Latvia and Lithuania unveiled their plans last year to auction UMTS licenses in early 2001 and the second half of 2001 correspondingly.

Finland became the first country in the world to award licenses for operation of 3G mobile telecommunications networks back in early 1999. Sweden followed a year later.

UMTS will be launched in most European countries at the beginning of 2002.
