Greek Mobile Operators Gird For 3G Services
date: 23rd January 2001, source: http://www.dowjones.com/
Greek cellular operators Cosmote and Panafon- Vodafone are
accelerating their preparations for the transition towards offering third
generation mobile services.
Panafon said Friday that it's ready to offer General Packet Radio
Service, or GPRS, system services, following the completion
of successful commercial trials with corporate customers.
Cosmote, for its part, is one step ahead as it has implemented GPRS
systems, saying it has initially started providing GPRS services
to two of its leading customers, BP Hellas and Coca-Cola HBC.
Third generation mobile licenses are due to be auctioned in Greece
in February.
GPRS technology enables high-speed data transfer capabilities,
by employing packet switched techniques, similar to that of the Internet.
Along with the provision of services such as e-mail, file transfer and
access to corporate networks, GPRS can be used for the provision
of generic Wireless Application Protocol-based information.
Panafon is 55%-owned by the U.K.'s Vodafone
Group PLC while Cosmote is the cellular arm of Greek
telecommunications heavyweight, Hellenic Telecommunications,
or OTE .
