Japan's DoCoMo plans to spend $8.5 bln on 3G services

date: 29th January 2001, source: AFT

Japan's biggest mobile telephone company NTT DoCoMo Inc. said Monday it planned to spend about one trillion yen (8.5 billion dollars) over the next three years on third-generation (3G) services.

The investment plan covering the next three fiscal years to March 2004 will cover the rollout of 3G after DoCoMo launches the advanced mobile services as a world-first this May.

Under the plan, DoCoMo said it planned to double spending on the 3G project to around 300 billion yen in the year to March 2002.

Asked about Japanese reports that the company will boost total capital investment for the year to March 2002 by about 10 percent to 1.1 trillion yen, DoCoMo spokesman Hiroto Nakagawa said: "It is too early to comment on that.

"Details of the capital spending will be announced around March," he said.

"The size of capital spending for fiscal 2001 will be determined based on the market's movement."
