Malaysia already chosen three 3G operatorsdate: January 4, 2002 On Friday, the Business Times said Malaysia will award the three 3G mobile phone spectrum to Telekom Malaysia, DiGi.Com and Maxis Communications. Quoting unnamed sources, the paper said the three were chosen by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia as they were seen as having the financial capability in rolling out the services. The decision was made in December. The paper also said the Government might even waive a $13 million licence fee. In last November, Malaysian Minister for Energy, Communications and Multimedia, Leo Moggie, said that the government is to allocate just three licenses. There are currently five network operators and this license allocation is part of the government's programme to force consolidation within the sector. The Communications and Multimedia Commission is to issue documents about the tender in February with licenses being issued in July. Maxis and Technology Resources Industries have both said that they are looking to the 3GMVNO model rather than acquire licenses and expand any existing networks. It has been the Malaysian government's intention to force consolidation amongst the five operators in the industry and so it is highly likely they will allow 3GMVNOs to exist.
