Alogics develops modem for WCDMA basestationsdate: January 16, 2002 Alogics, a Korean ASIC venture company, has announced that it has successfully developed and commercialized a modem for asynchronous IMT-2000 (WCDMA) basestations. "We have secured world-level technology with the development of [this] modem. It will sustain our technical superiority in next-generation technology developments," said J D Kim, president of the company. "Alogics has been known as a display chip developer for security systems. Now the company will be reborn, focusing on this modem development for IMT-2000," said Kim. Mass-production of the modem was scheduled to start at the end of 2001 or early 2002. During the first quarter of 2002, the company plans to complete a new version of the product, doubling the current 16 channels and reducing the software cost for the operation, as well as increasing the speed to 10 Mbps. According to industry sources in Korea, almost 70% of the world market is likely to adopt asynchronous IMT-2000. "The new modem developed by Alogics is a core component in the system, which is forecast to grow to US$20 billion worldwide by 2005," Kim added. WCDMA enables a wide range of services through mobile phones, including moving pictures at speeds of between 12.2 Kbps and 2 Mbps. It also supports two diversities and six sectors with a chip density of 450 thousand gates. "The modem development [was] completed by joint-development between experienced professors and engineers at Alogics," explained Ho-ki Kim, director of management administration. The professors participating in the project were previously engaged in a synchronous CDMA development project with Samsung. Several companies in Japan, Europe and the US are known to be developing this type of modem. "This is the first time in the world to commercialize the 16-channel modem for asynchronous IMT-2000," he said. "We are very proud of the product, which shows the technological power of Korean ventures in the next-generation mobile communications field." During the first half of 2002, Alogics will work to establish strategic relationships with domestic and overseas suppliers of basestation systems. In particular, the company will be targeting the China market.
