Lucent and Qualcomm Conduct Successful 3G Wireless Voice Calls Employing UMTS Technology

date: January 16, 2002

Lucent Technologies and Qualcomm Incorporated today announced the successful completion of a series of voice calls over Lucent UMTS infrastructure using a Qualcomm 3G UMTS-compliant test mobile phone.

Lucent tested its commercial-grade UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) with a Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT) MSM5200 Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipset-based test mobile. The testing involved location registration for mobile users and the completion of a series of clear, high-quality voice transmissions with no delays. All test components complied with the 3GPP Release 99 standard.

These successful test calls certify that Lucent UMTS equipment can support mobile devices -- including mobile phones, Web-enabled personal digital assistants, wireless modem cards for laptop computers and other wireless devices -- employing Qualcomm chipsets.

"Lucent helped pioneer the commercial introduction of CDMA, the foundation of all 3G spread-spectrum technologies, and this experience has enabled us to quickly develop solutions that operate with leading vendors such as Qualcomm," said Bruce Dale, vice president for UMTS product and offer realization for Lucent Technologies. "Our work with Qualcomm is helping to speed development of commercial 3G UMTS solutions and ensure that our infrastructure supports a variety of handsets and other mobile devices."

"Qualcomm is using its proven CDMA experience to deliver validated, end-to-end solutions for UMTS operators," said Luis Pineda, vice president of product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies.

The Lucent UTRAN solution, which is currently being shipped to customers for commercial deployment and testing, includes the Flexent OneBTS base station, Lucent's platform-based solution for spread-spectrum 3G standards such as UMTS, and the Flexent Radio Network Controller, a powerful new network element designed by Lucent's Bell Labs that supports key communications functions such as radio network control, circuit mode voice coding and packet mode services.

The calls were placed using a Qualcomm test mobile phone the size of existing GSM handsets. This test mobile incorporates the MSM5200 baseband processor, the RFR5200 receive chip, the RFT5200 transmit chip, and the PM1000 power management chip, samples of which are available now. The MSM5200 solution supports the 3GPP frequency division duplex (FDD) mode of Wideband CDMA -- the technological underpinning for UMTS -- and provides a peak data rate of 384 kbps.
