Alcatel Back in 3G Racedate: January 17, 2002 - BWCS French equipment manufacturer Alcatel is hoping to make up for lost time in the race for third-generation mobile network orders in Europe. The company believes that its alliance with Fujitsu of Japan, which was signed in September 2000, has been a major factor in helping it develop UMTS systems that can rival those of its European rivals such as Nokia and Ericsson. Alcatel claims it has gained a vast amount of experience from working with Fujitsu and it is now hoping to turn that experience into firm orders. So far, Alcatel has signed only a handful of 3G equipment contracts in Europe. In its domestic market, where it has traditionally been a major player, France Telecom has contracted it to install only a small part of its 3G network, while the bulk of its 3G infrastructure rollout has gone to Nokia and Ericsson. Alcatel’s only European 3G deal outside France has been with TMN in Portugal. However, according to the Financial Times, the manufacturer is now confident that it has made enough technological advances to be able to become a serious challenger for future 3G deals. Alcatel plans to have installed around 25 trial UMTS networks by the middle of this year.
