Vodafone’s German 3G services to be in used in Autumndate: January 18, 2002 Vodafone D2 said on Thursday that their new generation mobile service will be up and running in Germany in the latter half of the year after a good build up of their 3G infrastructure. Vodafone D2, Germany’s second largest mobile phone operator, said a number of handsets from major mobile phone makers will be available for the new service later in the year. Juergen von Kuczkowski, head of D2, said he did not expect to over take Deutsche Telekom for the number one position. They will concentrate on profitability to offset the enormous cost of the 3G licences and infrastuture. Deutsche Telekom said is had 23.1 million mobile users in Germany by the end of last year. The six UMTS licence holders in Germany are T-Mobil, Mannesmann, E-Plus, VIAG Interkom, MobilCom and Group 3G UMTS.
