Sony Ericsson to release 3G handsets in the first half of 2002
date: January 19, 2002

Sony Ericsson's new generation of 3G multimedia handsets, set for commercial
release in the first half of 2002, will sweet-talk the eyes as well as
the ears.
3G: Candy for the Eyes
Sony Ericsson's first range of 3G multimedia mobile products will be commercially
released in the first half of 2002. The big news for users is these are
phones and accessories that will talk directly to the eyes as well as
the ears.
"Sony Ericsson believes that more and more people will use a handset
to look at the display instead of having it on their ear," says Stefan
Streit, Vice President, Product Marketing, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications.
3G Handsets: touchy feely
According to Stefan Streit, higher data transmission will mean 3G phones
will have bigger color displays and be more intelligent than today's handsets.
In other words, mobile phones will stop being something consumers just
listen to and become a more interactive, three-dimensional sensual experience.
3G multimedia handsets, products and applications will not be just for
consumers' ears. It's time for their tongues and fingers to get involved
too. 3G mobile products will be multi-sensual, things to watch, touch,
feel and play with.
3G: Playing the game
With this emphasis on playfulness and interaction Sony Ericsson are now
deeply involved in exploring services, products and applications that:
- use digital cameras
- offer music options
- connect mp3 players and radios to handsets
- use better loudspeakers
- offer teens and youth users the chance to play games over the air
"The display interface and the menu system will be of greater importance,
if you enjoy using your device you'll start to using more functions and
features." Explains Stefan Streit.
3G: Designed for you, whoever you are
Sony Ericsson is also doing serious work on designing unique phones, in
order to bring on board and satisfy individual customers with individual
lifestyles and individual tastes.
"When it comes to design, obviously people will start using their mobile
phones in different ways," Streit says. "Design doesn't only mean hardware
design - even more important will be the user interface and user experience,
which needs to be easy and fun to use. The mobile multimedia device will
be much more than just a communication tool."
The company has announced that they will be number one in mobile multimedia
devices before the end of 2006.
