Hutchison-CAT to be first in next-generation rollout in Thailanddate: January 21, 2002 Hutchison-CAT wireless operator will launch the first 3G service in the local market by September to mark its debut as the fourth cellularphone operator in Thailand, a source said. HutchisonCAT is also the country’s first operator in Thailand to select the 3G platform CDMA2000 1x wireless technology for its 3G cellular system. Hong Kong’s telecom giant, Hutchison Telecommunications, has a 65% in HutchisonCAT through IMobile, of which the Hong Kong telecom owns 49 per cent. The Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT) holds the remaining 35 per cent stake in HutchisonCAT. “Thailand is also the first country among Hutchison Telecom’s 3G investment markets worldwide where it will roll out 3G,” the source said. But whether the service will fizz or flop among Thai consumers remains to be seen because the 3G handset’s price and its service fee are relatively high. The source added that Hutchison Telecom was expected to spend about US$800 million (Bt35.2 billion) in total on the Thai operator, which is now busy deploying its network.
