GTRAN Wireless accelerates deployment of cdma2000 1XRTT data services in Latin Americadate: January 22, 2002 GTRAN Wireless, the world's first company to launch cdma2000 1X data card solutions for wireless networks, today announced that its DotSurfer card has been deployed in several Latin American countries. GTRAN Wireless started high-volume shipments of its 1X product in the fourth quarter of 2001 with leading carriers in Latin America such as Telefonica, Peru; Telesp Celular, Brazil; and Telefonica, Brazil. Deploying the DotSurfer 1X product in South America is another example of being the first to lead the way to global mobility, providing cdma2000 (1XRTT)-based products on six networks in five countries. The DotSurfer card enables computing devices, such as laptops and PDAs, to wirelessly access the Internet, email, and other multimedia applications. "We are pleased to work with GTRAN Wireless to introduce the DotSurfer into Latin America," said Ivan Ciganer, Manager of Large Commercial Customers Groups of MoviStar Empresas, Telefonica Moviles, Peru. "Commercially available data devices that take advantage of the latest CDMA 1X technology will ensure consumer appeal towards such a device. Demand will increase." Telefonica, like other network operators, believes that their commercial deployment of GTRAN Wireless' DotSurfer PC cards would revolutionize the telecommunication market in Latin America. "Telesp Celular, offering next-generation CDMA technology, is very proud to offer a product from a wireless data leader like GTRAN Wireless to the Brazilian market," said Luis Avelar, Vice-President of Wireless Data and Wireless Internet. "Demonstrating the ability to deliver multimedia wireless access at speeds greater than 100Kb/s, DotSurfer's benefits and applications are important steps toward the wide-spread acceptance of high-speed wireless data." According to a recent study by The Strategis Group, wireless Internet services will increase from 1.4 million users to more than 47 million in 2007 in Latin America. The study, "Latin America Wireless Internet Markets," analyzes the region's six largest markets: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela, for many of the most common wireless Internet technologies. The Latin American region also holds a great deal of promise for wireless carriers. According to research by Frost & Sullivan, the introduction of wireless Internet services could help industry participants in Latin American PCS and cellular service markets realize important new sources of income. DotSurfer card meets current-generation cdma2000 1X specifications and has been used by Korea Telecom Freetel and SK Telecom to offer mobile Internet access at data rates up to 153 kbps.
