Korea to Invest $104 Million in 4G Mobile Communicationdate: January 24, 2002 The Ministry of Information and Communication will invest by the year 2005 a total of 135.4 billion won ($104 million) in the first-stage of the fourth-generation (4G) mobile communication to develop technologies for super-high speed packet radio transmission and broadband wireless LAN (local area network) and mobile softNet. The first-stage R&D team will pursue mobile communication technologies using optimal wireless networks that will provide mobile Internet users with multimedia services up to several mbps (megabytes/second). This necessitates technology to maximize transmission speed and frequency efficiency, as well as the integration technology of wireless and fixed networks, the ministry said. The ministry will set up a "commission for the research of 4th-generation mobile communication," which would accommodate the views of communication businesses and industries, adjust direction of research and development and monitor international standards.
