DoCoMo confident on take-up targetdate: January 27, 2002 On Friday Japan’s largest mobile telephone company, NTT DoCoMo, said it is confident of signing up 150,000 subscribers by the end of March for its 3G services. Earlier this month a senior executive said that the goal of 150,000 subscribers would be difficult. But President and Chief Executive Keiji Tachikawa told a news conference that there was need to change its outlook for its 3G service. At the same time, NTT DoCoMo said it will expand the geographical area of its FOMA cellphone service on Jan. 31 to increase the use of its next-generation technology among consumers in Japan. The mobile phone giant said its 3G service will cover a number of new major cities in Aichi prefecture and several major cities in Gifu, Mie and Shizuoka prefectures, in central Japan. DoCoMo's 3G service is currently available in southern Kanto, near Tokyo, and in major parts of the Tokai, central Japan, and Kansai, western Japan, regions. DoCoMo’s 3G service, FOMA (Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access), was launched last October and offers advanced mobile data and video options such as conferencing. Since then it has been hit by technical glitches and loss of consumer interest.
