Operators asks the Belgian Gov to delay launch datedate: January 28, 2002 3G mobile telecommunications operators have asked the Belgian government to postpone the launch of WCDMA 3G mobile phone services because of a lack of compatible equipment. New handsets capable of sending and receiving third- generation services, including high-speed Internet connections and video downloads - won't be available until later this year, said Jean-Luc Van Kerckhoven, spokesman for Belgacom SA's mobile unit Proximus. The new service was supposed to begin in September, but Van Kerckhoven said a mass rollout probably wouldn't begin until at least a year later. Belgium's other mobile operators are Mobistar and KPN Orange. Together the three companies spent a total of EUR450.2 million last year to buy 3G licenses. "All three operators are facing the same problem," said Van Kerckhoven. All three of the Belgian operators - Proximus, Mobistar and KPN Orange have said that they would start legal proceedings against both federal and regional governments unless a clear set of rules was devised which offered some sort of clarity for rolling out their 3G networks. The operators have all become disillusioned with the lack of building permits being granted and served formal notices to regional and federal governments asking for a clearer permit process.
