SK Telecom launches commercial 1x EV-DOdate: January 28, 2002 SK Telecom said it has launched what it calls the world's first commercial cdma2000 1x EV-DO in the city of Incheon. EV-DO can deliver data at up to 2.4Mbps under ideal conditions, 16 times faster than the mainstream technology of cdma2000 1x capable of offering 144Kbps transmission speed. EV-DO is widely recognized as 2.5G wireless, which is powered by Qualcomm's CDMA technology, or a prelude to the full-fledged 3G service, though some government and telecom company officials regard EV-DO as a 3G service. "SK Telecom launches a commercial version of cdma2000 1x EV-DO service, about 10 months sooner than the planned implementation by KDDI of Japan and Sprint of the United States," SK Telecom network division director Kim Il-jung said. SK Telecom subscribers in Incheon are now allowed to access the EV-DO network through a PCMCIA notebook wireless Internet card. The company, which kicked off a testing-level service of EV-DO in November last year, said it would expand the service into Seoul next month and other major cities by the end of April, focusing on the areas where the forthcoming 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup are scheduled to take place. SK Telecom said EV-DO will be available in 83 cities across the nation toward the end of the year. The company said EV-DO service is priced at 2.5 won per packet and detailed pricing will be introduced in April.
