3G global coverage may not be pie in the skydate: January 29, 2002 - source: Siemens UMTS NewsDesk Inmarsat, the satellite operator, has confirmed it has been holding talks with Vodafone and other 3G operators regarding the possibilities of allowing them to use its new BGAN network for global 3G coverage, it has been reported in one daily newspaper. Michael Storey, CEO, Inmarsat, confirmed that the company had been in talks with operators and manufacturers about the possibility of allowing customers to roam onto its network in areas outside 3G coverage. Because of rollout logistics terrestrial 3G services will initially be available only in big cities and towns. Storey said Inmarsat would make its satellites compatible with the 3G service, though this roaming service was not part of its commercial plan. The last edition of 3G Bulletin featured an investigation into BGAN as the satellite component to 3G and Inmarsat's strategy to upgrade in order to provide wireless satellite data communications.
