3G Delayed in Spain Againdate: January 29, 2002 - source: BWCS According to reports in the Spanish press the government believes it is unlikely that 3G mobile services will be launched by this summer. Originally the Ministry of Science and Technology had demanded that applicants which won a licence for the new phone services should launch in August 2001, in at least 22 Spanish cities. As it became clear that the first deadline was unfeasible the Ministry relaxed its ruling and declared that services should be launched by June 2002, now it appears that this second start date will be postponed. The chief reason given by the government is the predicted lack of suitable handsets. The main mobile operators in the country appear to be in agreement with the government, for once. Xfera has already said it plans to virtually mothball its 3G operations until the technology catches up with its plans. Both Vodafone and Xfera now seem to believe that June 2003 is a more realistic launch date.
