KT Crop invites equipment bidsdate: January 30, 2002 KT ICOM Co, a mobile unit of Korea's largest fixed-line carrier KT Corp , said on Wednesday it would invite bids next week to supply telecom equipment for its 3G mobile services. The equipment would be used for a pilot 3G service the company plans to offer in May, in time for the 2002 World Cup soccer final games to be co-hosted with Japan. "To save costs, we are going to lease those equipment from a vendor to be selected this time," Cho Ji-hoon, a KT ICOM spokesman, told the press. The equipment would be worth 60 billion won ($46.03 million) when purchased, he said. KT ICOM has four telecoms equipment manufacturers hoping to be selected as the final two suppliers of its 3G network and plans to choose them in separate bidding in March or April after a benchmark network test by the four in early March. The four are Samsung Electronics , LG Electronics , Sweden's Ericsson and a consortium of Korea's Mercury Corp and Canada's Nortel Networks.
