Swisscom says no worthwhile 3G services until 2004date: January 30, 2002 - source: Siemens UMTS NewsDesk Swisscom has said it did not expect any worthwhile 3G mobile services in Europe until 2004 when handset technology has sufficiently developed. Carsten Schloter, CEO, Swisscom Mobile said: "At the moment people are saying we can expect these handsets to be there in the third quarter of 2003. I'd say it will be 2004 at the earliest." Schloter thinks that despite networks being in place prior to this, no significant amount of users will purchase a 3G handset. Schloter also admitted that the GPRS networks were not currently working sufficiently "For the time being, I would personally suggest to customers not to buy a new mobile phone until three to four months' time. None of the currently available [GPRS] mobile phones work properly." In December, Swisscom Mobile and Ericsson, has set up the first UMTS calls on UMTS pilot network in Bern. Swisscom Mobile is the first network operator in Switzerland to successfully set up connections using the new network technology. The connections were set up despite the fact that the UMTS terminals used had only just been received.
