Lucent Supplies Equipment to Verizon Wireless for First Commercial 3G Wireless Network Launched In USdate: January 30, 2002 Lucent Technologies said today it has supplied the 3G mobile network infrastructure for Verizon Wireless's Express Network in significant East and West Coast markets, which was launched earlier this week. The work completed for this project is part of the $5 billion agreement the two companies announced in March 2001. The Express Network is the first wireless network in the United States to be powered by 3G1XRTT advanced technology, and will enable Verizon Wireless to offer its customers new high-speed mobile data services such as audio streaming, e-mail and Internet access at speeds of up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps). Lucent supplied the products, services and software to enhance Verizon Wireless's network with advanced 1XRTT technology without the need for a substantial investment in new base stations by Verizon Wireless. The 1XRTT technology will potentially double the voice capacity in the network and increase data-transmission speeds by nearly 10 times. Jim Brewington, president, Mobility Solutions Group of Lucent Technologies, said, "The commercial launch of the first 3G network can help Verizon Wireless attract new customers through innovative high-speed data services and increased voice capacity, while also providing significant benefits to their existing subscribers."
