InterDigital Joins TDD Coalitiondate: January 30, 2002 InterDigital Communications, a developer and enabler of advanced wireless technologies and product platforms, announced today that it has joined the TDD Coalition, a new industry consortium formed to promote Third Generation (3G) Time Division Duplex (TDD) technology. InterDigital and the TDD Coalition will work to raise the level of awareness of TDD and its benefits, and stimulate demand for TDD among operators around the world. InterDigital and the TDD Coalition will work to raise the level of awareness of TDD and its benefits, and stimulate demand for TDD among operators around the world. InterDigital, a pioneer in defining wireless technology standards, is developing both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and TDD technology for 3G WCDMA-based networks. TDD uses the unpaired band in the 3G spectrum, which makes it the perfect complement to FDD. TDD is ideally suited for asymmetric data communications applications such as mobile Internet access, e-mail communications, video streaming, file transfers and many other applications. Dr. Alain Briancon, Chief Technology Officer of InterDigital, commented, "There is growing interest in TDD technology, an integral component of the 3GPP solution. Operators and equipment producers are recognizing that a complete WCDMA solution, consisting of FDD and TDD, will provide more efficient use of spectrum and a broader range of applications and services. The full WCDMA solution will promote higher customer usage of 3G products and higher revenue opportunities for operators." The TDD Coalition is a new industry consortium whose purpose is to promote TDD airlink technology and explain its benefits to global regulatory bodies, standards groups, the media and the broadband industry in general.
