SingTel Mobile leads with region’s first 3G packet data calldate: January 30, 2002 SingTel Mobile is proud to be the first operator in Asia Pacific outside Japan to have made the first 3G packet data call successfully. At SingTel’s Ayer Rajah Exchange yesterday, data calls were made to download games from the Internet and also for videoconferencing at an impressive data rate of 384 kbps over the 3G packet trial network. Mr Bill Hope, SingTel’s Executive Vice President of Network, said: “This is a significant milestone in the development towards the mobile network of the future, which requires packet technology that allows operators like SingTel Mobile to provide high speed and quality multimedia services to their customers. “SingTel is committed to building a world-class 3G network so that our customers can enjoy broadband services while on the move. Looking ahead, mobile phones will be an essential tool for customers to access the Internet and multimedia email with video and large attachments any time, anywhere. We will provide our customers with a 3G network that can support their data communication needs.” The trial system which supported the 3G data call is supplied by a consortium consisting of Siemens IC Mobile, NEC Corporation and ITOCHU Corporation. SingTel Mobile is also testing 3G technology with other vendors. SingTel Mobile expects to award the 3G contract by the middle of the year. About $350 million would be spent over the next three years building its 3G network. In November last year, SingTel Mobile successfully completed 3G voice calls as part of its 3G trial. Local and overseas calls were made to test the quality of 3G voice calls.
