Vodafone Ireland completes 3G test call
January 7, 2003
A spokesperson for Vodafone has confirmed that the operator has
made its first 3G test call in Ireland in late December. The operator
successfully completed the voice only test but an O2 spokesperson
said Vodafone's test was old news and nothing special.
All three UMTS license holders in Ireland, Vodafone, Hutchison
and O2, have said that they expect to have 3G services in early
2004.
In November, the three companies reached an agreement to share
building of 3G radio masts in Ireland, easing the rollout of services.
The Irish telecommunication authority has been an exception in allowing
operators to share networks. Many governments in Europe do not allow
operators to share networks despite the problems license holders
are facing.
Vodafone launch its live! service late last year, offering users
a taste of 3G services to come with new data services including
MMS, downloadable ringtones, games and online content. O2 has a
similar service, also offering MMS and gaming.
Ireland awarded three 3G licenses in the summer of 2002 for a total
US$172.7 million. Hutchison was granted the A license which required
the operator to provide 53% coverage of the population by 2005 and
80% by 2007. O2 and Vodafone were awarded the B license, obliged
to cover 33% by June 2006 and 53% by June 2008.
